Default Just another fan art thread

Hi everyone, and thanks for checking out my thread. The primary purpose of this thread is going to be practice pictures for my coloring techniques. This is what I'm working on, I hope to have the full color version up soon. I always did suck at line art, but it cleans up a lot better once i get to playing with it in photoshop, I assure you! The eyes look particularly bad in the line art.

Anyways, here's a preview of whats to come. Not great, not even good, I know, but I have very little art experience and I'm just doing this for fun since I won a free art tablet a while back and I wanna get some hours in on it!

Hell, I'd do the same thing if I won a free tablet. Nice start though, especially for someone that doesn't have a lot of artistic experience.

I need some help... I honestly have no idea how to color a picture in photoshop at all. I've been trying to get that nice, smooth color look that so many artists seem to achieve easily, but it always turns out splotchy and stuff. How do i get the colors to blend and transition more smoothly?

So far i've used absolutely nothing besides the brush to lay down the base color, then the burn tool to shade it. Those are the only two tools i know how to use. Unfortunately, i have trouble with the burn tool though. When i am trying to shade, the parts that are already shaded turn out much darker by accident when i shade another part, cuz i accidentally pass the brush over them. Is there an easier way to shade and such?

Here's a VERY early version of something I'm working on to help demonstrate what i mean. The lineart hasnt been cleaned up at all yet, and i was just using it to try and practice shading. As you can see, it's turned out pretty bad thus far. The shading just doesnt gradually blend in, it looks all spotty and stuff. How can i avoid that?

if you find using photoshop and such too difficult, can always get Open Canvas, which is designed for tablets :) What it comes to tools, I use only watercolor brush and pencil and leave all the special effects out such as burn, dodge, smudge ect. But then again, I hate photoshop brushes so I guess my attitude comes from that
