Default Another Music Request:

Well, I'm still on my never-ending quest for musical bliss on my PC, and I've run into another snag: my old version of Winamp played these PSF2 music files (they are FFXI:RoZ sountrack that I got from a friend), but it eventually started crashing my explorer, so I ditched the winamp and upgraded to the newest version. Now this new version doesnt recognize PSF2 files.

Does anyone know of any good file converters around that could perform such a task? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Was I not clear? Im sorry. Hmm... what's the best way to put it: I have a lot of music soundtracks from playstation games, such as Beyond the Beyond, Tales of Destiny, Kartia and other "gems". When I unzipped them all, they turned out to be in a form called PSF2. They have a different icon than the standard MP3 file: while MP3s have the newer-looking icon, these have the old 2-D look to them.

At any rate, they worked fine on my old winamp, but it got corrupted somehow. I updated to the new winamp and now it will not play them. I am looking for a music file converter.. programs that can convert files from one type to another, like from midi to MP3.

I hope that is clear.

Well thats just it: the older version worked, however for some reason it just decided to crash windows explorer whenever I opened it up recently... I had no choice but to upgrade it, as the new version said that my current version was flawed.. which it was..

the psf2 format was a way to emulate the sound chip within the playstation so that the reproduced sound mimiced the ps as much as possible while maintaining a small file size. There's formats for all older game systems that allowed for basically the entire track to occupy like 64kilobytes or so (at least for like snes emulated music). With the proper plugin you can enjoy these musics with repeat and such where it'll repeat and play just as if you were in the game listening to it.

More info on this particular format: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Sound_Format

I would search winamp.com for a psf2 plugin or just google it. I'm sure you'll find a plugin to try out. Google is your friend ^^. Also due to the nature of the file itself it can't be easily converted to another audio format like mp3 or ogg since the music is recreated on the fly through emulation. You'd have to first be able to play the file and then let it play while something records the sounds created until you tell it to stop, like trying to convert an old record into a cd lol pain in the butt the first few times.

Default On that note!

If you do find a plugin that works with Winamp, you can set winamp up to convert the song to a .wav file at the least. This file will be huge, but can be burned to a cd to be ripped as a mp3 to replace the old file. Hope this helps out, and I'll do some digging for ya tomorrow if I don't see a post saying your successful. :)
