Default Ease of Use / Standardization / Uniformity of .DAT files

It's just a thought, and I in no way shape or form want to insult, or degrade the spectacular work I see so many people doing on .DAT files.

As a computer savvy end user, and someone who reads, uses, and works with documentation of all sorts... I kinda wanna start a small project. Hopefully people will respond favorably, and be willing to help.

MithraF - Body - 1-55-89 - ScorpionHarness - Sexy version.DAT
ElvaanM - Legs - 1-135-24 - BronzeSubligar - Buldgy Pants.DAT
TaruTaruF - Body - 1-34-28 - VermillionCloak - CuteVersion.DAT

Those are some examples of what I would consider a good format to standardize things.

The entire concept is a WIP, but, if you had tons of these files all in the same directory, they'd all fall into the right place.

(RACE) - (GENDER[M/F]) - (SLOT) - (DAT PATH) - (ORIGIONAL PIECE) - (DESCRIPTION)

And screenshots, dear god screenshots. And an .MQO file would be nice, too.

I may start compiling stuff on my own... It's just really sad that there's no central repository for .DAT files. FFXI Dats is kinda ... weak, and not current. Often people do not properly submit their stuff. Weeding through dozens of folders is tedium at it's best. And I hate having to download something, apply it to a piece of gear through the .dat copier, just to see what it looks like, in model viewer.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions, opinions - welcome.

I have started to do this with all the DATs on my system, tedious yes.. lol
Mine looks a little more simple
M_ (mithra)
T_ (taru- no need for male or female as their DATs are unisex)
G_ (galka)
EF_ (elvaan female)
EM_ (elvaan male)
HM_ (hume male)
HF_ (hume female)

so essentially my format is:
<race>_<datnamedescription>-<author>
if it's a 18+ dat i'll toss it into the name:
<race>_18+_<datnamedescription>-<author>

Also one thing that bugs me with dats (and packages) is that either they are unidentified for race gender- and/or the author doesn't submit an image of what the set looks like. Personally I can deal with renaming archives, but I do agree when I have to take the time to swap out the DATs just to get an image to go with the set- it gets tedious. I think the worst is some peoples' filefront pages... you see a set name there, download it and there is no indication of what race/gender it is for- and the files are names: head, body, etc.. lol

I've been using a standard format on all my dats. follows the format;

# - # - # . <race> . <gender if required> . <description> . DAT

I also always include a screenshot of the work.

However i find including an MQO redundant, since anyone who would ever work with the file would know how to extract the MQO & its rather useless without the .dds & .bmp & .mcd files that go with it.

When I make a new .dat mod, I usually do not include file numbers when it's not for any specific set of equipment since it could be used to replace anything. I always have a short description along with which type it is (body, legs, face, etc.) and race with m or f for gender as the file name. Single .dat mods I just post up the .DAT file and attach a MV screenshot with my post.

Some stuff it's fairly obvious what it's meant to replace.
Some stuff I'm nor quite sure.
Some stuff it's clear what JOB it's for, but what gear it replaces is iffy.
Sometimes I have NO CLUE what the name of something is, that something is meant to replace, making it very hard to replace it.

Blargh. I'll bumb this thread when I have some substantial freetime in which to maybe attempt to start to complile stuff.
