Default .mqo / .dds -> Maya useable?

Why must my subjects tell all?
How can I go from .dat to something that maya 8.5 will read?

Depends. If Maya can import .OBJ files (should be popular enough) you could try exporting DAT files into MQO using ModelViewer, then convert MQO to OBJ using Blender for example (need a plugin though). That's how I import stuff into 3DS MAX at least.
