Default One of those 'return' threads

Hi everyone. I thought I should post here since the crowd over at killing ifrit can be a pretty cynical & sarcastic bunch. Posts like this can be a death sentence over there

First off, I quit FFXI about 18 months ago for various reasons. But there are a lot of things I miss about the game and I've been thinking I might make a return. Is it possible my character might still be stored after a year and a half? The Square page is kind of vague about this. I know they sometimes have those 'return to vanadiel' promotions. Was hoping someone here might have first hand experience with this.

I also just wanted to know how FFXI is fairing lately. In what ways has it improved/gotten worse? How is the economy & population (generally speaking/cross server) right now? Do you think It's worth coming back with no gear? Am I still going to be stuck on those old missions that nobody does anymore?

Most of all I'm just hoping the game is still going strong and isn't suffering a slow death.
Thanks for any information & words of advice!

-Nakula.

I actually just left FFXI for WoW couple months ago. I wasnt impressed by last expansion :X They made alot of improvments in gameplay I think though....they just shoulda done some of those things 4 years ago XD And about them keeping an account for long time....they may do it. My friend got his character back once after/when he quit for a year.

The only real thing that's suffering is trying to level past 40. If you want to progress in CoP or ZM you'll have to find friends to do it most likely, though.

The economies have very much stabilized, and its because SE now takes an active role enforcing RMT activities.

I believe you can retrieve your old character. I had a friend gone for 2 years and they were able to retrieve him just fine. Starting out new is a lot of work, and probably isn't worth your time.

Missions are a pain, just like they always were. Finding an active and skilled linkshell is a must for missions, especially CoP.

In overall terms, yes, things have slowed down, but things are also much more stable. Whether or not FFXI is dying is up for debate, but in my opinion, its still strong enough to be worth coming back and enjoying yourself.

CoP horror stories aren't as bad as they were, imo. These days it's (sometimes) just dandy to gang up with some random guy shouting for CoP Tenzen fight. I went through most of chains successfully joining random groups around Whitegate. There are specific fights this doesn't work for, of course, (airship) ...

Same thing for ZM's. Always been the case, they're so easy. Story missions have always been randomed, so its not really a problem. ToAU is usually randomed, it's as easy as ZM.

The only nerve wracking things left in the game to me is making bank and having good friends in the right places, which is almost required for a decent shell these days.

Define what you would mean by doing well or badly, and what you want to do in the game if you came back.

In my opinion even during the peak of gilseller dominance where they ruled Sky with an iron fist, if you never cared about Sky gear they really didn't bother you much. The GS in Sky only really ruined your day if you were one of those people who had to camp 16 hr Ulli's against them for your gear.

SE has been adding a lot more instance type events and a lot of gear comes from those. Since CoP they have been reducing World Spawn monsters which require Linkshells to go head to head claiming. So if you're a more casual based person, it's probably preferable now compared to the Zilart days.

How I feel on Pandy right now...

Economy's gotten stable, tho RMT do still try every now and then to artifically jack up prices. I honestly don't feel like I'm getting ripped off nearly as much as I did 2 years ago...when Taru Rice was going for like 14k a stack (now, 2k, 3k, maybe 4k tops, last I checked.)

The whole "if you don't have uber gear in endgame, you aren't getting EXP parties" kind of got shot to death with the advent of Campaign Battles, since people could then say "screw you, I can still get decent EXP while my flag's up" now, without having to resort to straight up soloing. (I know one WAR in my shell who always hated to /NIN, and now can get away with saying it to the faces of his party leaders, cos worst case for him is going to Campaign for 1.8k a fight average now. That's more than you'd get for some Besieged fights, and they last NOWHERE as long and are always going on...)

Getting help for missions still either requires LS help or gambling on whether or not random /shouts in Whitegate will get you into a party that might be comprised of other people who've never done the mission before and/or aren't competant enough to get the job done.
18 months...now I can't recall if that is a time before or after they made CoP somewhat easier in many ways... Now I've gotten myself involved with people doing CoP where the parties were downright awful, but as long as 2 or 3 of the people with the "critical jobs" know what they're doing, a win can usually be eeked out now in many cases.

Lots more people are busy with high level jobs than lower level jobs. Sure, they've made it easier for lower level people to get around, and added in stuff to help smaller parties out, but a lot of times, I've experienced folks get 4 people together and then quit outright because they don't have 6, and thus can't go to the cookie-cutter camps.

...and speaking of which, it's like some folks don't even think anymore for themselves...it's "dunes, Qufim, jungle, Citidel, Nest, colibri/Citidell again, Mire", and no deviation from the pattern what so ever. I don't think I've been in an EXP party in the 60's in the last month where it wasn't "mire or forget it".

OK, have to say "Campaign" again, just for one more thing....I feel like it's the closest thing to a "sandbox" for players 55+ this game has now. Gear up, go out, no worries about death or loss of EXP, and you can just experiment, screw around, try randfom parties with people in combinations of jobs you'd never otherwise see...
It's FUN, to me, almost all the times I do it. And you get a nice chunk of EXP on the side if you do well.

Even if I had to start over again naked and level 1, knowing what I know now, I think I could get a job back up to a respectable level in not-too-long a time, with the tools we have now...worst part would be farming for money/gear.

And making new friends, if I was gone so long everyone else had split by then.

Think the only couple of Eruca parties I've seen going on were for low 60's. Feels to me like every time I'm on looking for a group or checking out who's out where, anything 64+ goes straight to the Mire.
I could be wrong, or maybe it could be just some huge coincidence this is what people have been doing at the times I get on, but it's the trend I've seen just poking about.

I gotta agree with ppl being single minded. People would rather crowd up in the mire or wherever instead of going to sky. FFS when there's like 60ish ppl in the mire you better be setitng your sights somewhere else.

've had 3 LS mates who leveled jobs from 60-70 over the last couple of weeks who stated the exact same sentiment...(two of them old-timers, been on the game 4 years +)

I've heard several LS-rants in that time that usually went along the lines of "so I've been dragged out here under protest, and half the party's already gotten the other half kiilled, WHY are they coming here?"

Personally, the last couple months was the very first time I got a job up to 70, followed closely now by a second one, and so I had no idea what the norm for EXP camps was until that point, past what I had read in guides.
All I know is that if that this is the norm now, then from now on, I'm Campaigning from mid 60-to-70, cos I really, REALLY don't want to go back there if I don't have to...

Look, I get it if people want EXP ASAP, and ToAU zone + astral candy + doable chainable IT+++'s = lots of EXP, but that's kind of negated, I think, if half the party dies every 20 minutes, which was my experience at 65, 66, and 67...

EDIT: Quick snapshot right now...looking thru all people from 65 to 69 at this moment, and I see one party at Bibiki (which I haven't seen for at least a few days), a small Mamook party, some folks with flags up soloing Campaign areas or waiting in Whitegate, and a WHOLE LOT of solo people with no flags up in past Campaign-battle areas. And some 2-3 man campaign battle parties, apparently. I don't see many people at all in groups in that range right now, other than that.
Hmm.

This avatar was originally one of the default choices at this site I think

But a quick google for Empire Resource lead me to this site: http://www8.big.or.jp/~73113666/main/index.html

And more importantly, the doujin that it's from: http://maniax.dlsite.com/work/=/product_id/RJ025214 <- I would be surprised if this wasn't floating around here.

Not a doujin, just a CS set, there's 3 of them. And we got all 3.
