Default WTF is going on with my Hard Drive?

Okay, so I have a 512 GB Hard Drive, around 60 of which is partitioned off, leaving me with 455 GB to do whatever I want with.

I recall about a week ago only using up around 150 GB, with the remaining 300 GB free.

The other day I was looking at my computer stats, and noticed I had only 8.5 GB free, which was not much room left. I wondered how I could have possibly filled up so much space so fast, but I spent about half an hour cleaning up my computer anyway, deleting files and programs I don't need or use anymore, etc. I ended up freeing a good 60 GB, and it read as having 380 GB used.

So today I log in again, and check it. Only 8.3 GB free. The rest? Used up by something (I am not really sure what). I didn't install anything new, I didn't download any new music or anything, nothing. Not even a game update. What I want to know, is where is all of this hard disk space going?

Run scandisk, any spyware things, defrag, and use a program called CCleaner.

Stop downloading random pron. That fix's a harddrive 100%.

On a serious note, is it IDE SATA firewire...? Maybe there is something conflicting with your BIOS if its not serial ata or IDE?

You didn't mistake the 512 MB RAM for the size of the Harddrive space, did you? o.o It happens quite often where I work. lol

No, I didn't. I have 3 GB RAM.

I did a cleandisk and defrag. I'll have to look into CCleaner. As for the HD itself, II am not sure what it is... not displayed in dxidag.

You can find out what type of HD you have by clickin on C:/ (Or whatever your HD is named) and lookin at the side bar like so: (Assuming you're using XP, I can't imagine Vista having a much different way. If you have Vista and this doesn't work, try going through control panel or right clicking your HD and going to properties)

Mine says teh same thing as yours, except for the space obviously.

Type: Local Disk
File System: NTFS

Whatever the problem is, it's still happening. I freed up another 30 GB last night, today it only lists 16.7 GB free. I didn't DL any new files or anything.

Must be some soorta spywware possibly.

Could try posting a hijackthis log
www.google.com -> hijackthis -> mijin.org (its on there site somewhere)
download and post the log that program outputs, shows whats al running and hidden.

Also you could try...
"Search" on that drive and try this...

clear files -> don't change/touch that drive for 1 day -> search "recently accessed/created" files see whats going on there and where it is.

I did a google search on the files that I thought looked suspicious but it turns out they were all legitimate.

EDIT:

I... I think I found the problem.... It was FRAPS... I kept taking a bunch of 2 GB + videos....

haha yeah, I've done that a few times with fraps.. accidently hit its "record" button and since my PC is pretty decent.. I don't notice any slowdowns so I kept playing while fraps is making a video recording (for me it averages 3GB per 30seconds about) at 1024x768 record size

Looks like its your #1 cause... accidently recording :P

I don't run vista so I'm unsure of some of its process too ;/

Thing that do look suspicious to me though is...

C:\Windows\RtHDVCpl.exe

Yeah, I did a search on RtGDVCpl.exe, it's legitimate. Part of my sound card.
