This seperates the Dat into 4 files normally. DDS BMP MCD and MQO

The only parts the MV really needs is DDS MCD MQO to recreate the dat.

The BMP and DDS is primarily just a Texture that wraps around the the mesh.

The MCD MQO is to open in programs such as mestiquoa to alter the Mesh without any skeleton to work with. It renders the Mesh in a 3d pane that has the flat texture available to view also. Personally if you are going to change the mesh at all I would suggest you do this in VRS rather then in Mestiquoa, less room for error.

The BMP is there for easy opening in any standard app like MS Paint, Gimp, Adobe, etc.

Once done editing the BMP you want to use a program to convert it to DDS. Most use Graphics converter 3 or DXTbmp to convert it back. Personally DXT is a little easier to work with when it comes to making an Alpha map.

Here is the tricky part though, all your files (MCD MQO DDS) need to match name wise. This means when you convert the BMP to DDS rename it the exact same name

IE: You have newrdm.mqo then make sure you have newrdm.mcd and newrdm.dds also.

Once you're back in Model Viewer you go to File: Convert MQO to DAT

This will combine the MQO MCD and DDS files to recreate the DAT file. If you are missing any of these, or you changed them in a way that is abnormal you will either get an error message (typically MV will crash) or you will end up with a file that is pixilated or does not mesh together well (aka "explodes")

I believe the link for the "alternative to GC3" was to a forum post about DXTBmp, to which has been pruned. There is a basic tutorial here so might you be so kind to update that link in the quote in your OP to fix the page not found error over at ffxidats.com

in my quest to copy and paste certain motions to certain other motions, i found this page. so for that 1 dat file, there are over 100 motions? if thats so, am i boned? that would explain why when i replaced the idle motion with one dat, i lost all the others from a motion pack.
i get bored easily so i like to change the motions whenever i feel like it. would be best for me to figure this out vs constantly asking ppl to do it for me.
i would follow the links but every time i clicked on one, it sent me to sentai home, the page was not found, or completely useless (in Japanese or same thing in quote 2)

hmm yeha some links were to the past forums (phpbb) so it'll just loop to the front page (namely any link with the word "viewforum" instead of "showthread"

fixed the first link since I know what it links too, however... the others I'm not too sure on, will check it out later.

and an answer to your question, yes a very large amount of motions are tied to dat files, swapping say... your character motions with NPC motions, will cause many player motions to disappear.

For instance.. you tried to replace your "idle" with an ark angel "idle", you (and every other person on your screen of the same race and or all races) will no longer be able to do /dance or /blush or /wave because the Ark angels don't have those motions.

what im refering to, is that there are a ton of modified motions people have posted. and i can only use one of them. they all have the same dat locations so i cant use a motion i like that person A made, and use another motion that person B made.

what would be nice is if someone could dumb down the second quote on first post so someone who doesnt have any sort of programming background could learn and understand. how to split up the original file containing all the emotes, split the dat file that someone else made, and perhaps copy and paste without "exploding" something. i hope i make sense cause i really dont know anything about this. think it might be easier to go to missing/dat request section? it would be nice to be able to do this myself so i only have to buy y'all this once, but i may be a lost cause :X

Well there is no easy "way" to do it, since you'll need some decent amount of VRS knowledge to do it.

kitkat did make at one point the "mot's" to do what you described, however it confused the hell out of people because you can't just copy/paste it in easy without knowing how to use VRS.

You could always Pm kitkat for help on it and he/she may be able to help you with doing it

Boned? No, but this ties into your other question as well. Would it be wise to learn some basics of motion swapping in VRS? Yes, then you can change out specific motions in the dat and not lose others you want to keep. Idle, walk, run, and straff is a little tricky though cause these are in seperate dats. The lower bodies are in 89.dat, but the upper body without sheild is in 90.dat, and with sheild is in 91.dat. Lastly is your Flaps for armor being in 92.dat or 93.dat (still haven't mapped these dats fully). I wish I understood SE's reasoning behind this, but it would also explain why the game is process hungry when it shouldn't be. I would love to know why each race has only 1 dat that containes 100+ motions, but all the others for /emotes only have ~15.

I'm not the greatest at explaining things, but I can try to help you with this if you want and there are also pretty good tutorials at www.ffxidats.com that would also help you out. There are also others around the boards with just as much, if not more, knowledge about VRS that try to help people when they can. I'll be a little busy working on motions this week so if I don't answer right away it isn't cause I'm ignoring, just trying to get somethings done before my next term of college starts :x

Yeah, sadly you need to be a member of the community to check out some of the things there, especially tutorials and +18 things. It looks like you saved a lowerbody animation in the upper body spot which would explain why it is doing that. Typically since the two are seperated and "independant" of each other if you save the wrong part to the wrong spot then it will look as though it has no animation at all.

One reason I don't make things as simple as copy/paste anymore is because despite my best efforts to give people what they want, I can't please everyone. I save a lot of my work to .scn files then try to help people understand how to use them so they can pick and choose which animations they want and which they don't as well as put them where they want. It has taken me about 2 years to learn what I needed to know to do what I do in VRS, which is an ass backwards program to use sometimes. Anyone with Maya Autodesk or 3D max knowledge can tell you VRS does alot of things the hard way, but some of it is also done in a way it is easier to fine tune.

Trying to find a copy of DXTBMP so I can start learning to use it over GC3, but getting 404's on the topic links in this sticky, and the direct link in here no longer has the download available/hosted. Any help on where I can locate it?

Thanks! This saves a lot of time. The /sit mithra motion ids listed here seem to have the same motion ids for hume Fs. Maybe its universal for all races
