I think I remember reading somewhere that you need to have a recent version of DirectX 9.0c installed for the FFXI tools to work in VRS.

That is correct, a link to download that is here.

The tutorial on the VRS site also explains how to check to make sure your tools are downloaded. The most common problem is that people do not have the correct version of DirectX 9 installed. Since you've downloaded that and installed it, you should next check VRS to make sure that it is pointing to the correct area where your tools.dll's are located at. The tutorial is here: http://www.credes.com/us/product/80/plugin.html. If you have trouble navigating that do this:

1. Open VRS
2. Go to Visible > Option
3. Click on the "Plug-in" tab
4. Make sure the folder is set to your "LocalDLL" folder VRS created. ie. "F:\....\VRS\LocalDLL"
5. Click "Reload"

That should do it. If you still don't have the Tools menu, make sure it's "visible". You may have it set so that it isn't showing up on the work space. If that doesn't work...then you may not have any of the .dlls at all.

Hit the reload button, still no go... I looked in the folder that this is supposed to be pointing to as well and it's completely empty. There are no .DLLs in my Tool folder there. That's why I'm asking that they be uploaded so I can put them in there.

I'm not sure how you could've installed VRS without the .dlls. The zip file that you unpack contains all the .dlls that you need. If unpacked correctly, it should've created the appropriate folder and put the .dlls in there. Check the zip file to make sure they are in there.

Also, your \...\LocalDLL\Tool folder is supposed to be empty. The import/export tools are located in \...\LocalDLL\Ex\Tool. In that folder you should have 4 files in there (I have 5 files for some reason): FFXIReadTool2.ldl, FFXIReadTool.ldl, FFXIWriteTool.ldl, and FFXIWriteTool2.ldl.

My guess is those files are there but that VRS isn't loading them during start up. I had to reinstall DX9 to fix my problem. (Just make sure you reboot your computer). Otherwise, there's not much more advice I can give.

I did the following:

1. Deleted VRS.
2. Deleted VRS's registry entries.
3. Re-downloaded Direct X 9.0 and reinstalled.
4. Restarted my computer.
5. Re-downloaded VRS.
6. Confirmed that the FFXI up/download files were in the Ex/Tool folder
7. Started up VRS.
8. Noticed that the Tool box was still blank.
9. Reloaded them as per the above poster. Nothing.
10. Loaded a random folder so everything would go away and reloaded the right folder. Nothing.
11. Copied the files from the Ex/Tool folder to the Tool folder and reloaded. Nothing.

So am I just destined to not use VRS?

Perhaps there was a version change? The one I'm downloading is 0.7.4.9, taken from the post on this site.

It sounds like you're doing everything correctly so it's hard to troubleshoot any further. Only other thing I could think of was that you ran the "VirtualRealityStudio.exe" file instead of the "VRS.exe" file. But even if you ran the "VirtualRealityStudio.exe" file, the tool box should pop up all of its options once you open a schematic window. (All the menus will be blank at start-up until you actually open a schematic window. They won't show up if no working window is open.) If I had to venture a guess, it'd have to be something with the way your computer is set up. I run VRS on WinXP and Win2k just fine. Sorry I can't further dude.

Yay! I get to feel stupid now!

Figured out what the problem was... I thought the unpacker for the DirectX was the actual installation and I was unpacking it to Program Files. Noticed something on another site and it made me realize that I needed to find those files afterwards and install the actual DirectX. >_>

So now I have VRS. Thanks to the people who tried to help, and hopefully I'll be able to reward you with some new (and potentially disturbing) .DATs.
